Chapter 10

Every shard of plastic that rained down had unimaginably sharp edges. I was already in a duck-and-cover position from the noise that had rung out right before, but they still lacerated me from head to toe.

And now, our bottleneck meant nothing.

The zombies came in from all sides, and I couldn’t hear anything over the wind and the storm. At least, I thought I couldn’t.

Then I heard Lyssa.

She was calling my name, and through the dark, I could see her crawling out of her room. She had just managed to push away the weight of the shelves enough, and she couldn’t see in the dark like we could.

She didn’t know that three zombies had diverted from their ant-path to come straight at her.

Skidding and slipping on the shards of the greenhouse and the wet, muddy floor beneath, I got up and ran. I reached her just in time, and turned around to hit the first zombie square in the head. I was in the hallway now, covered by an actual roof and with carpet beneath my feet, and it made the work feel easier. My ears were ringing, but with a slight shelter from the wind, it was much easier to hear, too.

“Annie!”

“I’m here!” I said. I grunted with effort as I laid a blow to the second zombie, but I missed and hit its shoulder instead. In the time that it took me to raise my shovel to try again, the third zombie was on us. “Go back inside!”

“What’s happening?!” she yelled.

Then, she screamed.

While I had been pushing back the second two zombies with my shovel and trying to line up a hit, the first zombie had reanimated. He had Lyssa by the wrist, and I immediately turned, dropping my guard to hit his wrist as hard as I could with the edge of the shovel.

I took his hand nearly clean off, and then I drove the spade through the back of his head.

Their hands clamped down on me. On of them had me around the waist, dragging me away from my hysterically crying and screaming sister, and they were too close now for my shovel to be of any use.

And more were coming. They were filing down the hallway, going for Lyssa as I was dragged away. For a moment, I thought I could recover if I could just wiggle free from their grasp.

Teeth sunk into my arm. Teeth.

My head swam with panic as pain shot to my shoulder. I looked, but I shouldn’t have. They were eating me alive. They didn’t care where I kicked or hit them; they had lost all feeling when they died, and even as I heard my blows breaking bones and bending back joints in the wrong direction, they carried on.

We were just in view of the fight in the greenhouse. No one heard my screams over the gales of wind, and I could see blue sparks flying through the dark night.

The controllers that Charlie had failed to locate had found their way into the greenhouse.
